September 2009 | | Au Revoir to Sam Jones

Sam is a Part III Phyics student who has just finished a summer project supervised by James Loudon entitled Manufacturing a Phase Plate to Image Magnetic Fields using an Electron Microscope. The phase plate should be helpful for imaging flux vortices in superconductors. A copy of the talk which Sam gave at the end of the project can be downloaded here (13Mb pdf).

This year we walked from Ely back to Cambridge. Unconventional but very nice...and nobody complained about the weather (this time it wasn't to hot at all). More photos here (local access).

At the end of May HREM moved onto the VoIP system. All existing phone number have been preserved, but Erica, Juan carlos, and Martin (Room 813) now have their own line: *60748

A new important addition to the HREM equipment list: our first espresso machine. We are still optimising the procedures, but the first results are very promising!
