Magnetism on the nanometre scale is important in a diverse number of systems, both natural and synthetic. My PhD focuses on applying the techniques of off-axis electron holography, which allows magnetic and electric fields to be imaged at nanometre resolution, to explore nanomagnetic phenomena. I will be studying magnetism in biology, in rocks and minerals and artificial nanomagnets with technological applications, not only to characterise these systems, but to try and further understand nanomagnetism and the fundamental effects that govern its behaviour.
